Protected from the elements
The robust and stylish Samsung Galaxy S8 is built to go wherever life takes you. It comes with IP68 certification, making it dust- and water-resistant for up to 30 minutes in depths of up to 1.5m. Gorilla Glass-protected touchscreen means you don't need to worry about knocks, bumps and scratches. And the inner workings are sealed off while keeping all the ports open, so there's no fiddling with caps or covers wherever you want to use it.
Strong and long-lasting
The MobiWire Dakota can withstand drops and knocks, thanks to its Gorilla Glass 3 screen and robust build. It’s dust and water resistant too – and can even survive submersion in a metre of water for up to 30 minutes. Add a long battery life and you’ve got the perfect phone for a weekend away, a music festival or anywhere else regular charging isn’t an option.
Featuring Bluetooth for connecting to an external loudspeaker, a built-in FM radio and a micro SD card slot so you can take thousands of songs with you. It’s also incredible value.
Tough but smart
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 4 is built for the outdoors. You can use the touchscreen in wet conditions, and with physical buttons for ‘home’, ‘menu’ and ‘back’, you can perform basic functions wearing gloves. Water and dust-resistant, it's also been stress-tested to US Military standards.
Boasting a bigger screen than most rugged smartphones, and a higher resolution than previous models, the Xcover 4 looks good wherever you use it. It’s packed with smart features, too – including a 13-megapixel rear camera, and the Xcover Active Key that lets you access a chosen app with a single tap.
Good to know
Gorilla Glass is made by Corning. The latest version, Gorilla Glass 5, survives 1.6 m (shoulder-height) drops onto hard, rough surfaces up to 80% of the time, yet provides great optical clarity and touch sensitivity.
Phones with Gorilla Glass include:
The IP rating tells you how much water and dust your phone or device can withstand. It’s more precise than terms like ‘water-resistant’, but even devices with the same ratings can vary – check the individual specifications if you’re keen to know.
‘IP’ stands for ‘international protection’ or ‘ingress protection’. For devices, the first number tells you about the dust resistance. 5 means ‘dust protected’, so a bit of dust might get in but not enough to stop the device working. 6 means ‘dust tight’ – no dust will get in.
The second number is for liquids. Devices rated at 5 are protected against water spraying on them. Ratings of 7 mean the device is safe at between up to 15cm and up to 1 metre deep. A rating of 8 means the device is protected in more than 1 metre of liquid.
If there’s an X, such as IPX8, it means the device isn’t rated – so IPX8 would be tested for waterproofing but not dustproofing.
