Getting started with your iPhone

Here's what to do before you start exploring the features on your iPhone. If you’re moving to an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S and don't want to keep your existing Vodafone mobile phone number, or If you're joining us from another network, skip straight to Step 2. If you need more help, visit our help centre or Apple's guide to using your iPhone.

Step 1 - Transfer your number to a MicroSIM (existing Vodafone customers only)

To transfer your number to a MicroSIM, just go to our simple online form. Make sure you have your new Micro SIM at hand as you’ll need the number on the back. You’ll be asked to log in to My account to complete this process, or register if you haven’t done so already.

Please note: To use the online form, you must be a pay monthly, small business or One Net customer in the UK.

If you’re a pay as you go customer, just call 191 from your Vodafone mobile or visit your local Vodafone store.

For Corporate accounts, please contact your account manager.

If you’re moving your number from a standard SIM, you’ll know your number has been moved to your MicroSIM when ‘Vodafone UK’ no longer appears on the home screen of the phone containing your standard SIM.

Step 2 - Back up all your contacts and calendar details

Even if you're getting a new number with your iPhone, you'll still want to keep all the contacts and calendar details stored on your current phone. Use a our quick and easy back-up service to save everything until you're ready to put it all onto your new iPhone. How to back up your phone.

Step 3 - Installing the SIM Card

If your SIM wasn’t pre-installed, you must install it before you can use your iPhone. In the box your iPhone came in, you'll find a SIM eject tool. It's attached to the inside of the black booklet that contains the user guide.

Insert your SIM

Install the SIM

  • Insert the end of a paper clip or SIM eject tool into the hole on the SIM tray.
  • Push firmly, straight in until the tray pops out.
  • Pull out the SIM tray and place the SIM in the tray as shown.
  • With the tray aligned and the SIM on top as shown, carefully replace the tray.

Activate your iPhone (iOS 5 or above)

There are three options for activating your iPhone if you have iOS 5 or above.

When you turn on your iPhone you can choose whether to:

  • Set up as new iPhone
  • Restore from iCloud backup
  • Restore from iTunes backup

Ensure you have Wi-Fi coverage (the process cannot be done using 3G), select the option you want, and then enter your Apple ID (the same ID you use to log in to iTunes). If you don’t have one already, you’ll be prompted to set one up. You then just need to accept the iOS terms and conditions, and your iPhone will be ready to use.

Activate your iPhone (iOS 4.3.5 or below)

What You Need

  • To activate your new iPhone, you will’ll need:
    • A Mac or a PC with one of the following operating systems
    • Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
  • Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP (SP3)
  • The latest version of iTunes, available at www.itunes.com/download
  • An Apple ID (such as an iTunes Store account or MobileMe account) for purchases from the iTunes Store or App Store
  • An Internet connection for your computer (broadband is recommended)

Before you can use your iPhone, you must set it up in iTunes. During setup, you can create a new Apple ID or specify an existing Apple ID for making purchases with iPhone. iTunes also records the serial number of your iPhone in case you need it.

Activation

  • Download and install the latest version of iTunes from www.itunes.com/download.
  • Connect your iPhone to a USB port on your Mac or PC, using the cable that came with your iPhone.
