What is 5G?

5G is the newest, fastest generation of mobile networking.

Lagging and lost connections are a thing of the past, and superfast, stable downloads, streaming and connectivity are now available wherever you have 5G coverage - even when you’re in busy places.

5G allows you to enjoy vastly improved, seamless performance, whether you’re watching a film or joining a video conference. It’s changed the world around us - and it's helping us live better through 5G enabled healthcare, smart buildings, and smart cities.

The benefits of 5G

Connect in busy places

Make a call or use your data even when it’s busy - on station platforms, in stadiums and at festivals.

Download faster

Download anything from films and music to updates and apps in seconds, not minutes.

Stream seamlessly

Stream 4K video with hardly any buffering, wherever you are.

Video call in HD

Rely on 5G for smooth HD video calls, so you can catch up with the people who matter, uninterrupted.

Leave lag behind

A near-instant connection means a lot less lag - so your daily data use will be seamless.

Where is 5G available?

We are rolling out 5G to a growing number of locations across the UK and the EU and we aim to expand our 5G network as quickly as possible without compromising on quality. We aim to cover as much of the UK as possible and even more European destinations.

5G is expanding across the UK as the technology is implemented, and it's available in select areas of large towns and cities – check if 5G is available in your area with our Network Status Checker.

How fast is 5G?

5G is around 10 times faster than 4G. It’s designed to work at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, and peak speeds can reach above 1Gbps. This means you’ll be able to download a full HD film in around 3 minutes (compared to over 15 minutes on 4G).

  • Where 5G works at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, 4G works at average speeds of 23-35Mbps.
  • Where 5G can reach peak speeds higher than 1Gbps by default, basic 4G works at a maximum speed of 150Mbps, while 4G EVO (a later, faster version of 4G) can reach up to 800 Mbps depending on device capability and the number of carriers deployed.

5G speeds can vary, and depend on multiple factors, such as how far away you are from a mast, which spectrum is being used, and how many people around you are using 5G.

5G vs 4G

5G networks easily outperform 4G networks - no more data lagging on your commute, and you can stream quickly and easily, even in crowded places. 5G also benefits your smart devices - all of your devices have instant access to the internet, so they can exchange information in real time.

Can I get 5G?

To use 5G you'll need a 5G phone, a 5G plan, and be in an area covered by our 5G network.

In areas without 5G, you can use our 4G network. Your 5G device will then automatically reconnect to the 5G network once you're back in a 5G area.

All SIM cards are 5G-ready, which means you won’t need a special SIM to get the most out of our growing 5G network.

Our 5G network is growing fast - get a 5G phone and plan now to be first on 5G when it comes to your area.

Can I get 5G?

Getting 5G with SIM only data plans

If you already have a 5G-enabled phone and you need a new SIM card, you’ll need a 5G SIM only data plan and 5G coverage to access the full potential of your 5G phone.

Your SIM only plan will continue to connect to 4G when 5G isn’t available.

All our SIM only Red plans offer 5G access, as does our Unlimited Max plan - you’ll just need a 5G device and 5G coverage to use it.

Is 5G safe?

Yes - 5G is safe to use, and we have a commitment to safety and our customers. Thanks to years of detailed scientific research, Government legislation and international guidelines, we’re fully compliant with all national and international electromagnetic frequency regulations.

Why choose Vodafone 5G?

5G is the same price as 4G - so you can go faster at no extra cost. However, the Unlimited Max data plan you’ll need to use 5G and your 5G phone may be more expensive, as you’re paying for a premium experience. The Unlimited Max data plan has no speed caps, so your phone can work as fast as it's able to on 5G.

Vodafone 5G gives you faster speeds, lower latency and a more reliable connection - which makes great entertainment even better. Choose an Entertainment plan to get YouTube Premium, Amazon Prime or a Spotify Premium Entertainment Pass straight to your mobile for the length of your plan.

The future is 5G - and we’re innovating with our 5G network to transform everyday life for the better. Homes, cars, cities and even healthcare will enjoy a revolution in connectivity for a greener, safer and smarter world.

More information on 5G

5G is the fifth generation of mobile networks and is based on OFDM technology, a way of encoding digital data on multiple carrier frequencies. It’s designed to meet the increased growth of data and connectivity, allowing us to handle a huge amount of data and send it from one place to another much more quickly than previous technologies can.

In addition to faster speed connections and increased capacity, 5G provides a much faster response time (which is normally called ‘latency’), reaching lower than 2ms latency - this is 15 times less than previous technologies.

You’ll need a 5G-enabled phone to connect to the 5G network. You’ll also need a 5G plan, and be in an area with 5G coverage. You can check this using the Network Status Checker.

If you are using 5G and you move into an area that only has a 4G signal, your phone will automatically swap to that instead. It will switch back to 5G as soon as a 5G signal is available.

It depends on the data allowance you have. Our data allowances don’t change if you’re using 4G or 5G – so as long as you keep within your data allowance, you shouldn’t run out. However, you should remember that although 5G is much faster, you’ll still be using the same amount of data – so download films, TV shows and music as you normally would.

Because 5G works at faster speeds, you can download and stream movies and songs much more quickly. Downloading the same file on 4G and 5G will use the same amount of data, but with 5G it will take less time, which could lead to you downloading more. Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered with our Unlimited 5G plans.

Vodafone 5G costs the same as 4G, because we don’t think you should have to pay extra for a better experience.

Although some underground stations have WiFi connectivity, 4G and 5G are currently not available across the whole Tube network.

You can use our Network Status Checker to see if we offer 5G coverage in your area. If we don’t offer it yet, please be patient - we’re rolling out 5G across the UK as quickly and efficiently as we can.

The GigaCube allows you to transform our 5G network into WiFi. If you have unreliable or slow internet at home, or you live in an area not covered by our own super-fast broadband, our GigaCube could help. It’s a wireless router that transforms our 5G and 4G networks into WiFi, so you can stay online easily at home.
