Each player is randomly allocated a role as either a ‘crewmate’ or an ‘imposter’ (pretending to be a crewmate). The crewmates’ mission is to complete tasks and correctly identify the imposter(s). Imposters try to sabotage the mission and eliminate other players. There is a chat feature within the game where players can communicate, although if a player states that they are under 13 they are limited to pre-written phrases.
Among Us is a multi-player game but there is an offline single-player mode called Freeplay. A player can play privately with friends or join public games. They can also purchase additional items to change the appearance of their character or crewmate.
On some platforms, Among Us can be played with a guest account (meaning you don’t need to create an account to play). If a child states that they are aged under 13 when they sign up to play the game, they may need to share their parent/guardian’s email address.
Some safety settings are available such as the ability to decide whether to receive friend requests and game invitations. A player cannot turn off chat altogether but they can block and report people and filter out inappropriate comments. There may be additional safety settings on the platform used to play the game such as iOS.
