How it works
Fairphone is well known for its commitment to social impact and sustainability, using responsibly-sourced recyclable materials in its designs. The latest model has parts that can be swapped manually. This is helpful for parents wanting a smartphone option with a lower environmental footprint.
The smartphones allow users to do things like film videos, take photographs, send messages and access a huge range of apps from games to educational apps through the Google Play store. The latest model includes some artificial intelligence (AI) features such as photo editing, translation and responding to questions. Due to the sustainability and ethical concerns about AI, Fairphone enables concerned users to switch off these features.
Parental controls or safety settings available
Fairphone smartphones do have parental controls available and these can be accessed through the Google Family Link app. This gives parents the ability to:
• Set daily time limits
• Restrict their child’s access to specific apps, websites or features
• View the location of their child’s device
Settings also include a Moments mode that simplifies the screen to help children focus and manage screen time. On Android devices, a user can prevent apps accessing personal data such as device location through the Permission Manager.
