Vodafone turns on advanced network in Brighton as data usage increases by 33%

Vodafone’s largest ever investment programme in Brighton ensure customers are benefitting from our most reliable network ever.

Brighton super-charged 4G network

Vodafone’s largest ever investment programme is ensuring visitors, residents and local businesses in Brighton are benefitting from our most reliable network ever, including new super-charged 4G services.

With the network already carrying 33% more mobile data than a year ago, upgrades have taken place on sites across the area which are linked together with our ultra-fast fibre-optic network. This will meet the growing demand for mobile data services and ensures the network is ready for the arrival of 5G in the next couple of years.

A key part of our advanced 4G network in the area is a technology called carrier aggregation, which combines different bands of spectrum – radio frequencies used to transmit mobile signals – to increase capacity and improve data speeds. Over 94% of the sites across Brighton have got this enhanced 4G service, meaning customers can use their mobile devices to stream HD videos and access the internet within seconds.  The installation of the latest technology on sites across Brighton has resulted in fast 4G coverage for approximately 99% of the population.

Vodafone UK Chief Technology Officer Scott Petty commented: “We’ve invested billions in our UK network and services to improve coverage.   We plan to spend a further £700 million this year on our UK network alone, because we know connectivity plays a vital role in supporting our customers and the economy. We want to keep communities connected and ensure more customers can enjoy our network wherever they go.

We have a strong track record as a tech pioneer, making the UK’s first mobile phone call, sending the first text message, and making the UK’s first live holographic call using 5G in 2018. We were the first to start carrying live 5G traffic from a site in Salford, Greater Manchester and now have 5G in locations across Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain as well as the UK. Today, Vodafone serves more than 18 million mobile and fixed-line customers in the UK. Vodafone is the largest provider of full fibre in the UK – our superfast broadband services are now available to nearly 12 million homes across the UK.

Sustainability is also at the heart of what we do: as of 1 July 2021, 100% of the grid electricity we use in the UK is certified to be from renewable sources.
