How it works
Users can type or speak to Grok to ask questions or research topics. Grok has real-time access to posts on X and can search online, but like all AI models, its results may be incorrect. A user can customise Grok, such as being more formal or brief in tone.
The Imagine tab is used for creating pictures and videos. Users can pay to access more powerful features. Chats can be shared (read only) via a public link, but group chats with the AI are only possible within the X app.
Users can create a Project (a private folder for specific files Grok should ‘remember’) or use Grok Tasks to schedule automated research or emails. Minimise the use of image creation and use short prompts to reduce the environmental impact of using AI models.
Parental controls or safety settings available
There are no built-in parental controls and Grok can be used without logging in. Users can report issues or child safety concerns. ‘Companion mode’ (interactive characters) can be triggered on the mobile app, which may produce flirtatious or mature content even for teenage users. Grok includes automatic filters to restrict the generation of nude or ‘undressed’ images of real people.
A user can prevent their chat from being used to train AI models, and Private Mode prevents a specific chat from being saved. X users can prevent their X data from being used to personalise their Grok experience.
