What it is

Dola is a free artificial intelligence (AI) assistant used for chatting, learning and creative tasks.

Originally called Cici, Dola is understood to be the international version of ByteDance’s Chinese AI app, Doubao, though it does not have official ByteDance or TikTok branding. Dola can be accessed on apps for Android, iOS and Windows devices, or via a web browser. The official minimum age is 13, but a UK user must give an 18+ birthdate to create an account. However, the website can be used without logging in.

How it works

Users can casually chat with Dola via text or speech. A user can choose from thousands of different ‘bots’. These are AI personalities for specific tasks such as learning English, writing better social media posts, turning photos into AI-generated art, or getting dating advice. Many bots are based on anime characters or fictional roles.

Users can try Dola without an account, but with limited functionality.

Parental controls or safety settings available
There are no parental controls in Dola. The app has built-in filters designed to block inappropriate content, such as violence or adult themes. 

A user can block AI bots they don’t like, so they don’t see them recommended. Users can report harmful content by filling out a form in the app’s settings. They can join an online group on another app, Discord, to chat with other fans and get help from the developers. Users can block advertising tracking and opt out of personalised content or AI model training to keep their conversations and files private.

Harmful Content

Block or limit access to content that could be harmful to children e.g. videos that contain bad language or sexual, violent or discriminatory content.

Group Chats

Prevent the AI from being added to a conversation with multiple human users where it can read and respond to the whole group.

Time Limit

Decide when and for how long a user can access a piece of technology e.g. set a schedule on a broadband router so that internet access turns off after 8pm

AI Training

Retain chat history without allowing it to be used for AI model training. AI model training is the process by which the AI learns from your chat patterns to improve its future answers.

Voice Mode

Disable the AI’s ability to have spoken, real-time conversations or prevent it from reading its answers aloud in a human-like voice.
