Disney+

What it is
The Disney+ paid-for streaming app provides programmes and films on a wide range of devices including mobile devices, gaming consoles, smart TVs and streaming devices. Users can also watch on a browser.

How it works
Users browse tabs for Movies, Series and Originals (made by Disney). The ‘For You’ default setting on the home page presents a range of recommended films and TV programmes. There are branded hubs to view purely Disney or Hulu content (another streaming service that is owned by Disney). Disney+ content is age rated either using BBFC ratings (U to 18) or Disney+ ratings (from 0+ to 18+).

Up to seven profiles can be created. ‘Junior Mode’ provides a simpler interface with pre-selected content for younger children. Junior Mode content does not contain ads, and autoplay is disabled for profiles in Junior Mode.

The account holder can pay more to remove adverts, allow more streams at the same time, enable downloads, and improve audio-visual quality.

Parental controls or safety settings available
The account holder can set a PIN for their own profile and prevent other users from creating a new profile. Parents can:

Prevent autoplay of the next episode

Prevent videos playing in the background while their child is browsing the app

Enable ‘Kid-proof Exit’ so their child has to answer a simple question to exit their profile

They can set content ratings or block unrated and live titles. Commercial streamers are not required to meet the same educational or quality rules as public service broadcasters. Users can prevent their data being used for personalised advertising.

*The account holder must be at least 18. However, children can use the service if supervised by a parent.
