How Vodafone is making its technology centres more energy efficient

Vodafone UK is upgrading its technology centres in its race to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2027.

Vodafone has committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions across its UK operations by 2027 – “a hugely ambitious target”, says Andrea Dona, Vodafone’s UK Network & Development Director. 

One way of achieving this is by getting rid of old energy-hungry equipment and replacing it with the very latest, most energy-efficient kit.

So Vodafone is upgrading its technology centres and replacing older servers with new. These tech centres are like the brains of the network, handling all the millions of calls that come in from Vodafone’s masts and fibre optic cables across the world. They ensure all our calls and data get to the right place.

As these racks and racks of powerful servers operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, they use a lot of energy and get very hot. So they need cooling. Traditionally, Vodafone has used mechanical cooling systems, which also need energy to run. To reduce this energy usage – and thereby carbon emissions – Vodafone is switching to natural, fresh air cooling systems instead.
