BBC iPlayer

What it is
BBC iPlayer is a video on-demand service. It can be accessed on a browser or app on smartphones, tablets, smart TVs and gaming consoles such as PlayStation. iPlayer programmes and films include entertainment, educational, documentary and news content. It is provided by a public service broadcaster (the BBC), which does not operate for profit. The service is free to use, funded mainly by the TV licence, rather than adverts or a subscription.

How it works
Users browse categories such as ‘New and Trending’. They can also:

Search for a specific title

Add a title to their ‘Watchlist’ for later

Download content to watch offline

Watch the current live broadcast on all BBC channels (including children’s channels CBBC and CBeebies)

Films carry British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) ratings such as U, PG, 12, 15, or 18. Other content may have a BBC Guidance label (G) if it is unsuitable for children. Children’s programming has quality requirements and often focuses on learning and creativity.

Parental controls or safety settings available
Parents can create a child profile or a separate child account to access under-13 content. A PIN-protected Parental Guidance Lock manages access to content with guidance labels or higher age ratings.
iPlayer does not include screen time limits but there are options to turn off notifications and autoplay. A user can prevent the app personalising recommended content based on what they have previously watched.

*While the account holder must be at least 13, younger children can use the service with a supervised child profile.
