HBO Max

What it is
HBO Max is a paid-for streaming service providing TV programmes and films. A user can watch on a browser or via the apps for mobile devices, gaming consoles, smart TVs and streaming players such as Apple TV.

How it works
The home screen has popular films, sport and TV programmes for the user to choose from, and it recommends content based on what they’ve previously watched. A user can download content or add a title to ‘My List’ to return to later.

Users pay a basic monthly fee and can pay an increased amount to:

Remove adverts

Be able to download content

Get a higher quality picture

Stream onto more devices

Access sports content

They can create up to five ‘Adult’ or ‘Kid’ profiles for their household. A Kid’s profile provides age-appropriate content and experience, although commercial streamers do not need to meet the same educational or quality requirements as public service broadcasters.

Parental controls or safety settings available
Using the Kids profile, a parent can set the content ratings their child can watch. The choices are:

Little Kids (same as the British Board of Film Classification U rating, for the youngest viewers)

Big Kids (PG)

Pre-teens (12)

Teens (15)

Parents can set a Kid-Proof Exit PIN to prevent their child leaving this profile and/or add a Profile Pin to other profiles to prevent their child entering those profiles.

Users can turn off notifications and autoplay (of the next episode, recommended content or previews). A user must provide a date of birth and gender when creating their profile, but can prevent personalised advertising and turn off marketing emails in the settings menu.

*The account holder must be at least 18. Younger children can use the service with parental consent.
