Microsoft Copilot

What it is

Microsoft Copilot is a generative artificial intelligence (AI) assistant that creates text, images and answers questions. Copilot is available as a mobile app, on Xbox, Windows and via browsers. It is built into the Edge browser, Bing search engine and newer PCs. Android users can set Copilot as their default assistant. Copilot can be used without logging in. A paid subscription, Copilot Pro, offers faster performance and use within Microsoft Office.

How it works

Users interact by text or voice. The AI searches the internet and can use chat history to personalise its responses. Key features include:

Creating images

Summarising web pages

Rewriting text

Gathering files into a Notebook

Results may not be factually accurate. Adverts are included but are not personalised for under-18s. Users can choose the tone, speed or depth of analysis of Copilot’s responses. It is recommended that people use short prompts and minimise the use of deeper analysis and image creation to reduce the environmental impact of using AI models.

Parental controls or safety settings available
Copilot has no built-in parental controls but has automated filters to block harmful content.

Parents manage access and apply screentime limits through the Microsoft Family Safety app, across Windows, Xbox and Android devices. Edge SafeSearch applies to web results in Edge but not in the Copilot app.

Users can disable training on text or voice conversations and prevent Copilot using their data from other Microsoft products. Memory, personalisation and location can be turned off.

Safety restrictions available

Harmful Content

Block or limit access to content that could be harmful to children e.g. videos that contain bad language or sexual, violent or discriminatory content.

Group Chats

Prevent the AI from being added to a conversation with multiple human users where it can read and respond to the whole group.

Time Limit

Decide when and for how long a user can access a piece of technology e.g. set a schedule on a broadband router so that internet access turns off after 8pm

AI Training

Retain chat history without allowing it to be used for AI model training. AI model training is the process by which the AI learns from your chat patterns to improve its future answers.

Voice Mode

Disable the AI’s ability to have spoken, real-time conversations or prevent it from reading its answers aloud in a human-like voice.
