The compact Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 consoles, which includes its own screen, operates as a handheld personal gaming device. However, it can also be connected to a TV and be used for local multiplayer gaming by detaching the two ‘Joy-Con’ controllers for wireless use by two players. A player can subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online to play online with other people.
Some multiplayer games provide voice and text chat as part of the game. For other games, players can use external apps, or they can voice chat using the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app. The Switch 2 console provides voice chat functionality called ‘GameChat’ (and a user can video chat if they attach a camera to the console). A user may need to pay a fee and get parental permission to use voice or video chat.
Nintendo Switch consoles include parental controls, such as the ability to restrict access to age-inappropriate content and VR (virtual reality) mode. Parents can also prevent messaging with other users and disable the ability to share images from Nintendo Switch on social media. These settings are protected by a PIN and apply to every user of the console. Alternatively, the dedicated parental controls app (‘Nintendo Switch Parental Controls’) provides the ability to manage these settings and additional options relating to GameChat voice and video chatting, as well as allowing access to specific age-restricted games, viewing play activity and setting play time limits.
A parent can also create a ‘Family Group’ as part of their own Nintendo account online. This enables a parent to set spending limits at the Nintendo eShop, disable friend suggestions and prevent their child’s (under 16) account from linking to other games and sharing information with other games and services.
