Ten Ten

Ten Ten is a walkie-talkie style app. A user can connect with a friend or a group to communicate by broadcasting a voice message which is played live on the other person’s device, even if their screen is locked. Video messaging is also possible.

Although the app store ratings vary, the Terms of Service for the Ten Ten app state that the minimum age is 13. A new user must add a profile picture, their first name, and enable relevant permissions so the app can run in the background and broadcast when a friend talks to them. Users can silence the app or ensure that the app does not play a message whilst their phone is in Do No Disturb mode.

Profiles on Ten Ten are private by default, because the only way to add a friend is by using their unique pin code. However, the app enables a user to easily share their pin on other social media or messaging apps. Once an invitation to connect has been accepted, a friend can broadcast a voice message at any time. They can also ‘poke’ their friend which means a user’s friend will be notified they are using the app.

The Ten Ten app does not have parental controls and there are few safety settings. There is no moderation of conversations as the privacy policy states that the company cannot listen to conversations and does not store them. A user can block and report a friend and they can silence a friend or group. A user can report a problem by email or direct message on Instagram.
