Windows PC

What it is
A Windows PC (Personal Computer) is a desktop, laptop or tablet that uses the Microsoft Windows operating system.

How it works
A Windows PC can be used for a wide variety of activities, including entertainment, learning, socialising and office tasks. Users can install apps, games, films, TV programmes and AI apps from the Microsoft Store (as well as from any online site). Game distribution apps such as Steam and Epic Games Store are popular with Windows PC users. Recent Windows devices include Copilot, an AI assistant which is built into the taskbar and many standard apps like Paint and Photos. Users can chat with Copilot and ask questions, by text or voice.

Parental controls or safety settings available
Windows PC privacy and security settings include filtering out adult content in Windows Search, and managing whether apps can access location, camera or contacts list.

Parental controls in Windows PCs are accessed through the ‘Family Options’ menu item in the device’s Privacy & Security settings. Using this, parents can:

• Create an account for each child

• Set screen time limits and receive reports about their child’s online activities

• Block age-inappropriate apps and games

• Limit the Microsoft Edge browser to more child-friendly websites

• Control their child’s spending at the Microsoft or Xbox store

Parents can install the Microsoft Family Safety app to manage these settings across multiple devices. Game distribution apps may also include parental control features, such as ‘Steam Families’ on the Steam app. It is also advised to check the controls available within the games and apps accessed by your child. Content restrictions may also be managed through your mobile data and broadband providers.
