How Vodafone and Age UK are helping older people become tech-wise

As the UN marks International Day of Older People, Vodafone does its bit to narrow the generational gap by helping seniors become more comfortable with the online world.

Vodafone is launching a pair of initiatives to support Age UK as it helps older people across the country gain the confidence and skills they need to participate in online life.

The Digital Champions programme will provide in-depth one-to-one training for seniors over the phone. Once they’re ready to take the next step, they can borrow a tablet for a fixed period through the Tablet Loan Scheme to help them decide if they want to purchase their own.

The Digital Champions programme will launch face-to-face sessions once it is safe to do so. Vodafone is also releasing a series of informative factsheets, covering the basics of getting online, staying safe online and how to keep grandchildren safe online.

The initiatives are needed more than ever. As the UN marks the 30th anniversary of International Day of Older People on 1 October 2021, research by Age UK shows that millions of older people still don’t take advantage of the internet. Even those who are online often struggle with digital tasks, the research finds.

Vodafone’s latest initiatives to assist older people build upon its TechConnect classes which took place before the pandemic. The company has also raised awareness about technology’s power to help alleviate loneliness among the over 50s, with a pre-pandemic report detailing the scale of loneliness in the UK and its impact.
