ONLINE AND ONLINE GAMING TERMS

A parent who posts a large number of photos of their children online, often without the child’s consent.

When fraudsters attempt to trick users into passing on their personal information through malicious emails or pop-up windows.

Sexually explicit media shared online without the consent of the pictured individual, and usually by an ex-partner.

Virtual items that can be won or purchased within certain video games to decorate and customise characters. They can also be attained through online gambling.

Deliberately spreading controversial opinions, hurtful comments or threats online, often with the intention of provoking a reaction from others.

‘User-generated content’ is any form of content created by users of a service and made available publicly on that service, such as YouTube vloggers.

The in-game currency of Fortnite, bought with real money to obtain skins and other accessories.

A malicious computer program and form of malware that replicates itself to spread to other computers, often hidden within email attachments and instant messages. 

Otherwise known as vloggers. A person who creates and uploads content to YouTube and particularly someone who has a large fan base on the platform.

A group of low-level gamers in multiplayer games who team up to beat better opponents.

GAMING LANGUAGE 

Teen text/instant messenger slang for the word ‘sex’.

Short for ‘quoted for truth’, meaning you’ll hold someone to a previous online comment.

Backhanded compliments aimed at undermining someone’s confidence and increasing their need of the manipulator's approval.

Means ‘away from keyboard’ – a term used online to say you’ll be away from the screen for a while.

SOCIAL LANGUAGE

Stands for ‘before anyone else’ but is also used as a hybrid of the word’s ‘baby’ and ‘babe’. Used on social media and messaging apps as a term of affection
