How it works
Users type or speak ‘prompts’ (questions) to chat with the AI, which searches the internet (via Bing) to provide up-to-date answers with links to sources. Copilot can create images, summarise web pages and rewrite text, although the results may not be factually accurate. It includes adverts but these are not personalised for under-18 accounts.
Copilot GPTs are custom versions of the AI for specific topics like travel. A user can gather files and chats in one place to work on longer tasks (Copilot Notebooks).
Users can choose whether Copilot should use a different tone (e.g. professional), respond quickly, or do a deeper analysis. Use short prompts and minimise the use of deeper analysis and image creation to reduce the environmental impact of using AI models.
Parental controls or safety settings available
Copilot has no built-in parental controls but has automated filters to block harmful content (which cannot be changed). Copilot can be used without logging in.
Parents can manage their child’s personal access to the Copilot app and apply screentime limits through the Microsoft Family Safety app, which applies settings across Windows, Xbox and Android devices. Family Safety content filters (SafeSearch) apply to the web results Copilot displays in Microsoft Edge, but do not apply on the Copilot app.
Data from users aged under 18 is automatically excluded from AI training, and adults can opt out of training via privacy settings.
