Mind the closing doors: Vodafone 5G arrives on the Northern Line

Mobile internet access continues to grow across the London Underground.

Archway and Tufnell Park on the Northern Line have become the latest London Underground stations to receive Vodafone 5G.

With its much higher speeds and lower latency – the time it takes it to connect – Vodafone 5G is perfect for customers who want to download box sets, movies or work documents, no matter how busy or crowded the stations get.

These stations join Notting Hill Gate station, as well as the tunnels from Holland Park to Queensway on the Central Line, where Vodafone 5G is already available. Further stations are due to go live in the coming months.

It also comes soon after Vodafone 4G arrived at stations on both the Northern line and Central line as part of an ongoing programme with Transport for London (TfL) and BAI Communications (BAI).

Customers and businesses in rural Scotland benefit from mobile upgrades as Virgin Media O2 and Vodafone collaborate to tackle signal not-spots

Traquair in Peeblesshire and Balmacara in Ross-shire have benefited from a partnership between Vodafone, Virgin Media O2, the Shared Rural Network and the Scottish Government.

Theo Blackwell, London’s Chief Digital Officer, said: “It’s great to see 5G mobile connectivity now available at a number of Tube stations, proving that the state-of-the-art technology being installed across the network is already future-proofed and adaptable for the next generation of mobile signal.”

“The Mayor committed to Londoners that we would deliver 4G throughout the Tube network as part of his determination to build a better London for everyone and today marks the latest step forward as we work to improve digital connectivity at home, in our high streets, public spaces and across the transport network.”

Andrea Dona, Vodafone’s UK Chief Network Officer, said: “Bringing coverage to underground locations such as the Tube is always going to be a challenge, but we continue at pace with both our 5G and our ongoing 4G programmes. We will not stop until we have ensured customers can enjoy the benefits of connectivity wherever they travel on the Tube across the capital.”

Vodafone was named the most reliable network in London, as well as Best Network for Voice in London, based on measurements from the umlaut connect Mobile Network Benchmark in December 2022.
