Johnston Press, one of the UK’s largest media companies, is working with Vodafone UK to transform its technology infrastructure as it evolves its digital newsroom.
Johnston Press, one of the UK’s largest media companies and the publisher of the national newspaper i, The Yorkshire Post, The Scotsman and Northern Ireland’s News Letter, is working with Vodafone UK to transform its technology infrastructure as it evolves its digital publishing strategy.
Vodafone is providing data centre, workforce mobility and network services to support the delivery of two strategic transformation programmes at Johnston Press – ‘Newsroom of the Future’ and ‘Salesforce of the Future’ – which have been rolled out across its national and regional news outlets.
These programmes introduce a new flexible working model for Johnston Press staff, giving reporters and field sales teams the ability to work in any location, at any time, with access to the online services and digital platforms they need. As part of this initiative, Johnston Press is trialing the use of live streaming to relay news stories via smartphones to its online media outlets and looking at new ways to enhance the advertising experience.

Working in partnership with Johnston Press, Vodafone UK is providing:
- Co-location data centre services to enable secure hosting and delivery of digital content and applications. Working with Vodafone’s Cloud and Hosting Service, Johnston Press has reduced its data centre footprint by 70% while being able to scale its services. It has also achieved greater efficiency through better energy management and space reduction.
- Smarter ways of working for its 2,500 business, editorial and sales staff, enabling more effective collaboration between teams. Vodafone is providing access to new digital services from smart devices that will innovate how reporters engage with communities and sales teams with advertising customers.
- A ten-fold expansion of network capacity, from 10 gigabits (Gb) to 100Gb, across its infrastructure. This upgrade will equip the company to handle increased data demands and traffic as the company develops its digital news channels, capabilities and advertising services.
