Douglas Anderson founded Optus in 1992, when his son lost his sight in one eye after a regular eye exam failed to spot a retinal detachment. Today, millions of patients have benefitted from its technology.
- Optos is an innovative Scottish retinal imaging technology company that helps identify eye disease early, saving thousands of people’s sight across the globe.
- The company needed robust and consistent connectivity to support critical communication between teams as it continued to expand globally.
- Vodafone Business SD-WAN gives Optos a consolidated, simplified connectivity solution that is easy to manage and consistent across every site.
Vodafone Business has signed a three-year agreement to deliver a Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) for Optos.
Optos is a Scottish retinal imaging technology company, which helps identify eye disease early, saving thousands of people’s sight across the globe.
Vodafone Business SD-WAN will help Optos consolidate disparate systems into a single network solution, ensuring optimised and robust connectivity globally, while giving the company real-time visibility and centralised control over their global network.
This allows Optos to manage and optimise the connectivity between sites more effectively, keeping systems simplified under a single network.
5G network to help some of the UK’s most innovative businesses
Oxfordshire County Council has chosen Vodafone to build and manage a 5G Standalone (5G SA) mobile private network (MPN) at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus.
With reliable and efficient information exchange now established between departments worldwide, connectivity issues are no longer a major concern. Optos can therefore allocate resources to innovation and business development.
Adam Shaw, Head of IT, Optos, said: “Working with Vodafone Business has been transformative for Optos.
“Their SD-WAN solution gives us the secure, resilient connectivity we need to link our global sites and it means we can grow our business without having to keep purchasing new technology – it grows with us.
“This collaboration ensures we can provide clinicians with the tools they need to continue their work to help protect vision for millions worldwide.”

About Optos
When a five-year-old boy lost his sight in one eye after a regular eye exam failed to spot a retinal detachment, his father made it his life’s work to help eye care professionals by revolutionizing retinal imaging. Optos was founded by Douglas Anderson to make a patient-friendly device to capture a digital ultra-widefield image of the retina. Today, millions of patients around the world have benefited from optomap® retinal imaging in approximately 30,000 locations.
Our products produce high-resolution optomap images of 82% or 200◦ of the retina, something no other imaging device is capable of in a single capture. In addition, our latest devices, MonacoPro Spectral Domain OCT and SilverstoneRGB Swept Source OCT, integrate ultra-widefield retinal imaging and image-guided Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). All devices facilitate the early detection, management, and effective treatment of disorders and diseases evidenced in the retina, such as retinal detachments and tears, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. More than 4,000 published and ongoing clinical trials, as well as thousands of case studies and testimonials, show the long-term value of optomap imaging and OCT in diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient engagement.
As a division of Nikon Co. Ltd, Japan, since 2015 Optos is proud to be recognized as a leading provider of devices to eye care professionals to provide a more complete approach to patient care.
