Helen Lamprell, General Counsel and Director of External Affairs, Vodafone UK, discussed Vodafone’s new report – Driving Gender Diversity at the Top: 2019 & Beyond – on the BBC’s Worklife programme this morning.
The report looks at FTSE 350 companies that have strong records encouraging women in to leadership roles and identifies how they did it.
Interviewed by Worklife anchors Sally Bundock and Karin Giannone, Helen spoke about the importance of active sponsorship and mentorship within firms to foster a culture of progression and ambition.
Helen also talked about what she described as “the more surprising factor of a high level of board visibility” to support broader steps toward diversity.
“It’s not just about seeing high-profile women,” she said, “it’s about seeing the board in general – busting the super-human-boss myth. If people can see the boss as a human being, they’re more likely to aspire to that position themselves.”
The old adage that “if you can’t see it, you can’t be it” is especially true for women, she believes.
