How it works
Users can design original AI characters, giving them names, personality traits and specific voices. Users can also choose characters on the Feed (the home screen with recommendations) or search for specific personality types.
In the Stories digital choose-your-own-adventure format, the AI describes a scene, and the user chooses from set choices to progress the plot. Users can create a ‘livestream’ of a character talking about a specific topic, while the AvatarFX section features AI characters singing or speaking in photorealistic videos.
Social features include following creators, liking shared stories and resharing or remixing story highlights. A user can make a character they have created public so others can use it in their own stories, or share it on a separate app called Discord, so friends can interact with it there.
18+ accounts can text, voice or video chat with AI characters and join group chats with multiple people.
A virtual currency called Charms, earned via daily tasks, can be spent to create extra images or bypass adverts. Users can pay for c.ai+ for things like faster response speeds.
Parental controls or safety settings available
The app has removed the ability for under-18s to chat with AI characters, so it no longer works as a personal companion to teenagers. Teenagers can share a weekly activity report with a parent’s email, though parents cannot set time limits or see chat text.
A ‘Muted words’ setting allows users to list specific words they don’t want the AI to use. They can also hide specific character accounts from their Feed, block users, and report content. Users can also opt out of having their data used to train the AI.
