What to watch on Amazon Prime Video and Now TV in July

From live sport to mesmerising boxsets and films, these are our top streaming picks for the summer holidays.

While the sun is out and the weather is warm, many of us will still be spending many hours indoors even though lockdown restrictions are beginning to ease.

That doesn’t have to be a recipe for boredom though, as a rich crop of streaming delights are arriving on both Amazon Prime Video and the Now TV Entertainment Pass. Best of all, Vodafone UK customers can choose to have either service added to select Pay Monthly plans for a low monthly fee.

Amazon Prime Video: live sports

Sports teams and athletes may be competing in empty stadia, but their return to the field is still thrilling for sports fans. Following its successful live-streaming of select Boxing Day matches, Amazon Prime Video has been streaming further English Premier League football fixtures over the summer.

The latest is Watford vs Newcastle on Saturday 11 July, with one more as-yet-undecided match to follow. A full replay of the matches will be available from midnight on each match day.

If you prefer tennis over footie, then you’re in for a treat. You’ll be able to watch the WTA Tour from 3 August, the ATP Tour from 14 August and this year’s US Open from 31 August.

Amazon Prime Video: movies and TV

Knives Out

Knives Out has a star-studded cast, from Daniel Craig and Chris Evans to Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Plummer. This stylish whodunnit doesn’t just rely on its big names though. It also has a sharply written script and snappy direction from Rian Johnson, who also directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If you’re expecting Craig to speak in his usual crystal-cut ‘received pronunciation’ accent though, then you’re in for a surprise!

Knives Out will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video from 31 July

Ocean’s 8

If you can’t get enough of Hollywood stars romping around, then the escapades of Ocean’s 8 will be your cup of tea. Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Rhianna lead a squad of high-flying thieves and con artists in this spin-off of the George Clooney-led Ocean’s series of heist films. Expect more of the same, with cameos from the likes of Kim Kardashian and Maria Sharapova.

Mad Men

For something completely different, try Mad Men. This classic TV series oozes period style, but it doesn’t romanticise the social upheavals of 1960s America. Nor does it gloss over the flaws and tribulations of its lead protagonist, New York ad executive and troubled anti-hero Don Draper. All episodes of Mad Men are available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video.

Now TV Entertainment Pass

The Plot Against America

For a period drama with a difference, try this brand new TV series. Based on Philip Roth’s novel, it follows a Jewish-American family in the 1940s. But history diverges from the one we know as a celebrity populist xenophobe wins the White House from Franklin Roosevelt…

Succession

Succession is the best TV show you’ve never heard of. This darkly comic series charts the dynastic power struggle between members of a dysfunctional, expletive-spewing family as they wrestle for control of a global news conglomerate. Even though many of the characters are quite unlikeable, the scripts are so witty and the performances so nuanced that you’ll find yourself having sympathy for them nonetheless.

The Night Of

It’s tempting to dismiss American remakes of British shows out of hand, especially when the UK original won a clutch BAFTA awards. You’d be missing out on a treat though if you gave The Night Of a miss. Based on BBC One’s Criminal Justice, this tense mini-series follows a young man accused of murder. The superb cast includes Riz Ahmed and John Turturro.
