5G takes off at Gatwick in time for the Easter holidays

More capacity and faster data speeds for travellers at one of London’s busiest airports.

Vodafone’s 5G network is now live in the North and South Terminals at London’s Gatwick Airport.

Thanks to 5G’s supersonic speeds, increased capacity and greater reliability compared to 4G, travellers will be able to download boxsets, make last-minute bookings, and check the status of their flights faster than ever before.

Businesses at Gatwick’s terminals, as well as the airport operator itself, will also be able to use Vodafone’s 5G network to help improve their operations. Some of Vodafone’s earliest demonstrations of 5G and its benefits took place at transport hubs, from Manchester Airport to Birmingham New Street station, as 5G’s high capacity is especially useful in crowded locations.

The bolstered mobile coverage at Gatwick follows other improvements in Vodafone’s UK network, from using the latest mast technology to improve rural coverage to using phone boxes to improve reception in towns and cities.

Vodafone OpenRAN tech brings 4G coverage to seven UK rural communities

By using OpenRAN, Vodafone is bringing mobile coverage to more places than ever and helping to close the UK's digital divide.

Andrea Dona, UK Chief Network Officer for Vodafone, said: “The arrival of Vodafone 5G across Gatwick will mean holidaymakers and business travellers will now have our fastest data coverage – perfect for downloading those boxsets and movies or last-minute work zoom calls and business emails before stepping on to the plane.

“Going forward, Vodafone 5G can also play an important part in Gatwick’s growth, supporting the technology the airport relies on to operate as well as the businesses based there.”
