Standard UK call and text charges

You only start paying standard charges when you've used up all your monthly allowance of minutes.

Non-geographic call charges

Normally starting with 08, non-geographic numbers are often helplines for organisations like banks, insurance companies and utilities and charities. There are a few special 07 numbers too. None of these are usually included in your bundle's monthly minute allowance.

Premium rate charges

Premium rate numbers usually start with 09. They're used for information or dating services, chat lines or voting on TV shows like 'Strictly Come Dancing'.

Converting texts to picture messages

Why have I been charged for a text message?

Sometimes you’ll get charged for a text message even if you’ve got enough of your allowance left. This can happen because it was converted to a picture message (MMS), which may not be free.

Why did this happen?

Some operating systems and phones will automatically convert a text into a picture message – this is something that can happen on any network and is beyond our control. So you’ll get charged our Standard UK picture message rate for it. On some devices you’ll notice the character count changing from numbers to a file size when:

  • you’ve included a non-standard smiley or symbol such as an emoticon or emoji
  • you’re sending a group text
  • you’ve exceeded the character limit (with some devices this can be 160 characters and others it can be higher)
  • you’ve added text to the subject field

Older phones like the Samsung Galaxy S1, S2, S3 and S4, the Galaxy Note 1, 2 and 3, and the Galaxy Ace will change a text into a picture message if it includes certain smileys or symbols. If you use a downloadable third-party keyboard or emoticon and emoji packs, they’ll change a text into a picture message when you add them, too.

How can I switch this off?

If you’ve got a Samsung Galaxy S1, S2, S3 or S4, a Galaxy Note 1, 2 or 3 or a Galaxy Ace, you can switch the function off with a few simple steps:

  • Go to Messaging > Settings > Text Messages > Input mode > choose Unicode instead of Automatic

If you’re having this issue with a different device, you can check the  manual or you may have to contact the manufacturer to find out how to switch this function off.

UK data use on bundles without any data included £1.50 for 100MB of UK data to use that day – a day runs from midnight to 11.59pm.
Additional UK data use on bundles with data included
  • Once you’ve used all your UK data allowance, you’ll automatically be charged £6.50 for each additional 250MB of UK data you use, until your next monthly UK data allowance is added
  • If you took out a Red or Red Value Bundle after 1 April 2015 and go over your UK data allowance, you’ll automatically be charged £6.50 for each additional 500MB of UK data
