Frequently asked questions

There's normally a cost associated with upgrading your Pay monthly phone plan before your contract ends (an early upgrade fee).

If you bought an eligible Pay monthly phone from us and would like to upgrade any time after 12 months with our Annual Upgrade Promise, you won't be charged an early upgrade fee as long as you follow our terms and conditions.

Unless you're an existing customer with an eligible Pay monthly phone, our Annual Upgrade Promise is no longer available.

You're eligible for our Annual Upgrade Promise if you bought:

  • The Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, S21+ 5G or S21 Ultra 5G between 14 January 2021 and 31 March 2021,
  • iPhone 12 range between 16 October 2020 and 31 March 2021
  • iPhone 11 (any variant of the iPhone 11 range) and the iPhone SE purchased between 24 August 2020 and 20 October 2020.

It must have been bought directly from us, either online, in-store, or over the phone. You can upgrade 12 months from the date that your phone was dispatched - any earlier than this and you'll be charged an early upgrade fee.

You're also eligible for the Annual Upgrade Promise, if you bought:

  • The Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 5G, S20+ 5G, S20 Ultra 5G between 11 February 2020 and 30 April 2020; or
  • iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max between 13 September 2019 and 31 March 2020.

But if you wish to upgrade one of these devices, please call or visit us in store as you may be able to get a better deal.

If you'd like to upgrade, you can do this any time after 12 months of your 24-month plan.

The upgrade must be 12 months from the date that your phone was dispatched, not the date you made your order.

If you'd like to upgrade your eligible phone after 20 months, please call or visit us in-store as we may be able to offer you a better deal.

You won't need to pay an early upgrade fee as long as you return your old, eligible handset in the condition set out in our terms and conditions. But you will need to pay the upfront cost - if any - of the new phone you're upgrading to, as well as the monthly cost associated with your new plan.

The new Phone Plan and Airtime Plan you choose should cost the same or more than your current plan.

Find out more about our Phone Plans and Airtime Plans here.

You can choose to upgrade any time after 12 months and you won't be charged an early upgrade fee, as long as you return your eligible Samsung Galaxy or iPhone to us. Once you receive the returns pack we send you, you should post your eligible handset back to us within 14 days, to avoid being charged an early upgrade fee.

You can upgrade to one of our new Pay monthly Vodafone EVO plans, where you'll pay for your phone and airtime (data, minutes, texts) as separate plans.

Find out more about our Vodafone EVO plans.

You can't upgrade using our Annual Upgrade Promise online - you'll need to call us on 08080 408 408 or visit us in store. Use our Store Locator to find your nearest store.

You can either post it to us in a pre-paid returns pack or drop it off in any of our stores.

Return by post

If you choose to return your eligible phone to us by post, we'll send a pre-paid returns pack with returns instructions to your address. Just follow these instructions, place your phone in the returns pack provided, and take it to your nearest Post Office within 14 days of receipt.

We recommend you take a photo of your eligible phone with its IMEI (serial number) showing on screen before you post it to us. Just enter *#06# on the keypad to bring up the IMEI on screen.

Unfortunately, we can't accept responsibility for any loss or damage during transit. Please ask the Post Office for proof of postage. If you'd prefer to return using a tracked and insured returns service, just ask at the Post Office when you return your phone - additional costs will apply. If you decide to do this, you must still use the returns pack provided.

Once your phone arrives at our Warehouse, we'll check that it's in a condition which meets our eligibility criteria. If it is, we'll send you a text to confirm. If it isn't, we'll return your phone and you'll have to pay the early upgrade fee in full. You'll also need to pay this fee if we don't receive your phone within the expected 20 days.

Drop off in-store

If you upgrade and collect your new handset in store, you can return your old eligible phone to us at the same time. Bring your phone with you to our store, we'll check it over and send it off to our warehouse.

We'll send you a returns pack after you've received your new phone. This usually takes up to seven days to arrive.

If it's been more than seven days and your returns pack still hasn't arrived or if it's arrived damaged, give us a call free on 191 from your Vodafone number or start a web chat

Once you've received your returns pack, please post your phone to us as soon as possible to avoid being charged an early upgrade fee.

We accept any eligible phone in good working condition. This means:

  • Find My iPhone security features are disabled if it's iPhone or any Google accounts have been removed if it's an Android
  • It turns on to home screen
  • It makes and receive calls
  • It's fully functional
  • It's free from any signs of water damage
  • Screen and back of the phone/casing is intact
  • Touchscreen is functional

If you're returning your phone to us by post, we recommend that you take a photo with its IMEI (serial number) showing on screen. Just enter *#06# on the keypad to bring up the IMEI on screen.

Unfortunately, we can't accept responsibility for any loss or damage during transit. Please ask the Post office for proof of postage. You may also wish to return using a tracked and insured returns service - additional costs will apply. If you decide to do this, you must still use the returns pack provided.

Important: if we receive a phone that's broken or damaged, it'll be returned to you and you'll be charged the early upgrade fee in full.

You can upgrade to one of our new Pay monthly Vodafone EVO plans, as long as the monthly cost is the same or more than your current plan.

Find out more about our Vodafone EVO plans.

If you don't want to upgrade early, you can keep your existing phone and continue with your 24-month plan.

If you upgrade your phone as part of our Annual Upgrade Promise and you don't return your phone to us, after 21 days we'll charge you the full early upgrade fee and this will be equal to the value of the phone we were expecting to receive.

We can only accept your old phone for our Annual Upgrade Promise if all security features and personal accounts are deactivated.

  • Android: Please make sure any personal accounts such as your Google Account are removed. You can do this by heading to Settings > Accounts and then selecting the account you'd like to remove.
  • iPhone: You'll need to deactivate Find My iPhone. Head to www.vodafone.uk/switch-off to find out how.

To remove personal information from your phone, you'll need to restore your phone to factory settings. If you're unsure on how to do this, see our device guides.

We follow strict rules on data privacy and protection. Once we've received your phone, we'll delete any personal data that still remains on the device.

Important - if your phone arrives with security settings still in place, we'll return it to you and charge the early upgrade fee in full.

To ensure you don't lose any of your data, such as emails, videos and photos, you'll need to make sure all of the data is backed up securely, then you can load everything onto your new device.

For more information on transferring your photos, contacts and other content to your new phone, see our device guides.

If you're returning your phone to us by post, it's your responsibility to make sure the phone gets to us.

Please check the leaflet included with your returns pack for more information.

Unfortunately, we can't accept responsibility for any loss or damage during transit. Please ask the post office for proof of postage. You may also wish to return using a tracked and insured returns service - additional costs will apply. If you decide to do this, you must still use the return pack provided.

Important: if we receive a phone that's broken or damaged, it'll be returned to you and you'll be charged the early upgrade fee in full.

Unfortunately, you can't have both offers. You'll need to choose which option is best for you - either a Vodafone Advantage discount or upgrading with our Annual Upgrade Promise.
