Frequently asked questions

There is normally a cost associated with upgrading your Pay monthly handset plan before the end of your contract (an early upgrade fee).

When you buy an eligible Vodafone Pay Monthly handset plan and then upgrade any time after 12 months under the Vodafone Annual Upgrade Promise Offer (the "Offer"), you will not be charged an early upgrade fee.

You’re eligible for the Annual Upgrade Promise if you pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, S21+ 5G or S21 Ultra 5G from 14 January 2021. It must be bought directly from us, either online, in-store, or over the phone.

If you’d like to upgrade, you can do this any time after 12 months of your 24-month plan. This is calculated from the date your device is shipped.

You won’t need to pay any early upgrade fees, but you’ll still need to pay the upfront cost (if any) of the new phone you choose to upgrade to, in addition to the applicable monthly fee for your new plan. The new plan you choose must cost the same (or more) a month.

If you choose to upgrade any time after 12 months, you’ll need to return your eligible Samsung Galaxy or iPhone to us and then you can upgrade to a new Pay monthly phone, without any early upgrade fees.

You can upgrade over the phone and have your new phone delivered to you.

To avoid an early upgrade fee, you’ll have 14 days to return your current phone to us using the return pack we send you.

If you’ve upgraded and are collecting your new phone in store, you won’t be able to return your current phone at the point of upgrade, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

You’ll need to return your current phone to us by free, pre-paid postage using the return pack we send you. You should receive this within five days of your new phone arriving. If you still haven’t received it after five days, give us a call free on 191.

Each return pack is limited to one phone only.

You’ll find a leaflet included within your return pack which has further information on how to return your phone using the pack. It also includes a pre-paid postage label.

Unfortunately, we can’t accept responsibility for any loss or damage during transit. If you’d prefer to upgrade to a fully insured service instead, just ask at the Post Office when you return your phone (extra charge applies). If you decide to do this, you must still use the return pack provided.

We’ll send you a return pack after you’ve received your new phone. This usually takes up to five days to arrive, but may take longer due to COVID-19.

If it’s been a while, call us free on 191 or start a web chat

Once you’ve received your return pack, please post your phone to us as soon as possible to avoid being charged an early upgrade fee.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, S21+ 5G or S21 Ultra 5G that you’re returning must be in reasonable working order. This means:

  • Any Google accounts have been removed. Find out more at www.support.google.com/android
  • It turns on to home screen
  • The screen and back of the phone/casing is intact
  • Touchscreen should be functional

If you've broken your phone, the phone will be returned to you, and you'll be charged the early upgrade fee in full.

You can upgrade to any Pay monthly handset on any 24-month plan. However, the phone and plan you upgrade to must be the same monthly cost or higher than your current phone plan.

If you don’t want to upgrade early, you can keep your existing phone and continue with your 24-month plan.

If you upgrade your phone as part of our Annual Upgrade Promise and you don’t return your phone to us, after 21 days we’ll charge you the full early upgrade fee and this will be equal to the value of the phone we were expecting to receive.

To ensure you don’t lose any of your data, such as emails, videos and photos, you’ll need to make sure all of the data is backed up securely, then you can load everything onto your new device.
