Roaming changes in the USA

Find out how changes to 3G networks in the USA may affect your service

As part of network upgrades, the major operators in the USA have switched off their 3G services. This means you may notice an impact on your roaming experience, depending on your device.

To help minimise disruption, 4G Calling abroad is now live.

What is 4G Calling abroad?

With 4G Calling abroad, you’ll be able to make calls and enjoy data over the 4G network in the USA, which should result in improved call quality.

Make sure your device is updated to the latest software version

4G Calling abroad only works if you have a compatible device, which is controlled by manufacturers. You’ll also need to have a 4G plan.

If your device isn’t listed, you’ll be able to make calls over any available 2G network in the country. However, this does mean you may experience a lower call quality.

FAQs

For countries where Vodafone doesn’t operate its own network, we partner with other mobile networks to make sure you can keep using your phone abroad. This year, those mobile network operators are upgrading their networks to expand existing 4G coverage and new 5G services. To free up the capacity for these changes, they need to switch off older networks like 3G.

Unfortunately, we can’t control other operator networks – but now that a 4G Calling Abroad solution is live, this should result in improved call quality for compatible devices.

Device compatibility with 4G voice calls is controlled by manufacturers, so 4G voice calls will only work if you are on both the right plan and a compatible device.

If you’re having issues connecting automatically to the AT&T network, you can manually select AT&T.

Visit our Device guides to learn how.

If your phone isn’t listed, you’ll still be able to make calls over T-Mobile’s 2G network. This means you may experience a lower call quality while using your phone. You’ll need to make sure you’ve selected the T-Mobile network in your roaming settings.
