How does 5G work?

Faster

5G works on larger channels to carry higher speeds. Get faster mobile speeds than you’ve ever experienced before - play multiplayer action games on the go, get real time map information and download movies in seconds.

Greater network capacity

Means you can be confidently connected in a crowd with reliable data and call connections in busy places like train stations and football matches.

Lower latency

The new technologies used by the 5G network are designed to create less latency (lag).

How fast is 5G?

5G will work at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, and peak speeds will reach 1Gbps. Which means you’ll be able to download a full HD film in around 3 minutes (compared to over 15 minutes on 4G).

This is up to 10 times faster than 4G.

  • Where 5G will work at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, 4G works at average speeds of 23-35Mbps

  • Where 5G will reach peak speeds of 1Gbps, 4G works at a maximum speed of 150Mbps

So how fast is 5G?

How can I get 5G?

You'll need a 5G ready plan and a 5G phone to connect to the Vodafone 5G network. If you buy a 5G phone you won't need a new 5G SIM.

You'll also need to be in an area that has 5G coverage.

If you're using a 5G compatible phone in an area that doesn't have 5G coverage, your phone will automatically swap to 4G, 3G or 2G - depending on the signal that's available. Your 5G phone will then automatically reconnect to the 5G network once you're back in a 5G area.

More information on 5G and how it will change the world…

Because 5G works at faster speeds, you can download and stream movies, songs and more, much quicker. This leaves you more time to download and stream the things you love. Downloading the same file on 4G and 5G will use the same amount of data, but with 5G it will take less time, which could lead to you downloading more. Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered, with our Unlimited 5G plans

You’ll need a 5G-enabled phone to connect to the 5G network. You’ll also need a 5G plan, and be in an area with 5G coverage. You can check this using the Network Status Checker

If you are using 5G and you move into an area that only has a 4G, 3G or 2G signal, your phone will automatically swap to that instead. It will switch back to 5G as soon as a 5G signal is available.

5G is the fifth and newest generation of mobile networking. It has three main benefits outside of its faster speed:

  • Lower latency – Sometimes called lag, latency is the response time when you make a request. A lower latency means less time waiting for your favourite song, movie, or social media to load.
  • Reliable – Ever been at a stadium or festival, and found it hard to keep in touch? The 5G network has a greater capacity, so you’ll be able to reach your mates when it really matters.
  • Beyond – these two factors, and many other functions of the 5G network, offer the opportunity for exciting innovations such as smart cars and holographic calling

The international safety recommendations for radio signals apply to all frequencies up to 300GHz, including 5G, and there is currently no verified evidence that 5G frequencies are harmful to humans.

We are fully compliant with all national and international electromagnetic frequency regulations. Find out more

Vodafone 5G will cost the same as 4G, because we don’t think you should have to pay extra for a better experience. Our Unlimited 5G ready plans start from £23 a month.

The 4G Gigacube can reach speeds up to 300Mbps, and the 5G Gigacube can reach speeds up to 1GB, but the speeds achieved on your device while using the GigaCube may vary significantly. Speeds can vary depending on the layout of your home, the number of people using the Gigacube, your network coverage in the area and other environmental and technological influences.

To experience 5G: You must have a 5G ready device with the downloaded 5G software, a Vodafone 5G plan and 5G coverage. You can also experience 5G in Spain, Germany and Italy where it’s available. Coverage may be affected by a number of factors. For details and 5G availability see our coverage checker.
