Five steps to future proofing your business

ISDN is switching off. Here's how to embrace the new way of working in five easy moves… or risk the consequences.

Step 1. Get your head around what is happening, and why

From December 2025, BT Openreach is closing down all ISDN lines – which will basically mean an end to landlines in the UK and the lines most commonly used to make phone calls across the world.

It’s happening as part of a move to shut down the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) – which ISDN is a part of – because it’s become outdated and been overtaken by newer technologies, such as fibre broadband.

Once the shutdown is complete, a fully digital network will take its place – but it’s a move that will impact all businesses currently using landlines and other PSTN products.

Step 2. Know when everything is happening

In September 2023, any broadband or phone services that use the old copper network will no longer be sold.

In December 2025, the PSTN will be switched off and all UK landlines will cease to operate.

From 1 January 2026 – all home phone calls will be hosted via the internet.

Step 3. Take action

In order to ensure that they remain fit for purpose, businesses relying on ISDN/PSTN lines or legacy telephone systems should review their communications infrastructure as soon as possible.

This is because in today’s new world of work, reliable connectivity, cloud technology and digital transformation are fundamental to modern business models.

Step 4. Take time to understand the benefits

VoIP only requires an internet connection to work. This means you’ll be able to say goodbye to costly, old-fashioned analogue phone lines in your offices.

Because of this, businesses will benefit from better call quality and faster networks. This will in turn improve innovation, increase productivity and keep teams tight via hyperconnectivity.

The move towards more flexible and inclusive hybrid experiences will therefore be bolstered and future-ready operations and intelligent workspaces will be better enabled.

Step 5. Don’t delay

Organisations that are not prepared before the switch off date might also find that they’re at the back of a long queue of instillations while also having no telephone system. This could cost businesses customers and revenue.
