Compare Google Pixel 8 vs Google Pixel 9 Pro XL

Which one is best for you?

The Google Pixel 8 was released in 2023, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL was released a year later in 2024. As the name suggests, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is a larger device, with a 6.8-inch Super Actua display¹, which is up to 3,000 nits (screen brightness)². In comparison, the Pixel 8 has a 6.2-inch Actua display¹ and a screen brightness of up to 2,000 nits². Both phones offer fingerprint-resistant coating and IP68 dust and water resistance³.

In terms of battery life, the Pixel 9 Pro XL has a much larger battery at 5,060 mAh⁴ and offers up to a 100-hour battery life with Extreme Battery Saver⁵. Pixel 8 still offers a 4,575 mAh⁴ battery and up to 72 hours with Extreme Battery Saver⁵. A larger battery may be beneficial if you stream a lot of content or game frequently - which pairs well with the larger and brighter screen of the Pixel 9 Pro XL. The later model also features the Google Tensor G4 processor, in comparison to the G3 in the Google Pixel 8 - so it has even better performance.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL offers a much-improved camera system with three cameras, 50 MP wide, 48 MP ultrawide, and a 48MP telephoto. The Pixel 8 has the same 50MP wide camera but just a 12MP ultrawide camera and no telephoto camera. If you take a lot of selfies, the Pixel 9 Pro XL has a 42MP front camera with auto-focus whilst the Pixel 8 has a modest 10.5MP front camera. The Pixel 9 Pro XL also has the latest AI features to enhance your photography. Use the Add Me feature, which uses augmented reality to add the photographer who's taking the photo into the picture - plus, use Magic Editor to enhance your photo even further with tools to move or resize objects in the image.

To conclude, both devices are a great option if you're looking for a new smartphone. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is perfect for a budding photographer and mobile gamer - however, the Pixel 8 is a great choice for the casual smartphone user as it still has a great battery life and a decent camera.
