Overview

If your phone won't connect to 5G or your mobile data has suddenly stopped working, it can be difficult to know what's causing the problem. Issues with 5G connectivity can happen for several reasons, from local network outages and coverage limitations to phone settings, software updates and SIM-related issues. Fortunately, there are a few simple checks that can help identify the cause. In this guide, we'll explain the most common reasons why you may not be able to connect to 5G and the steps you can take to fix this.

Check 5G coverage and network issues

If your 5G isn't working, start by checking whether 5G coverage is available in your area. While 5G coverage continues to expand across the UK, availability can vary depending on your location. You may also notice differences between indoor and outdoor coverage, as buildings, walls and other obstacles can affect signal strength.

It's also worth checking whether there are any temporary network issues or planned maintenance affecting service in your area. If you're a Vodafone customer, you can use our coverage map to check available coverage and our network status checker for any known issues nearby.

If you're in an area with limited 5G coverage, your phone may automatically switch to 4G until a stronger 5G signal is available.

Make sure your phone is 5G compatible

Not all smartphones support 5G. If you're using an older device, it may only be able to connect to 4G networks.

Most smartphones released in recent years are 5G-ready, but support can vary by model. If you're unsure, check your device specifications on the manufacturer's website. You can also check device specifications by using our device guides

Check your plan and SIM support 5G

To access 5G, you’ll need a compatible SIM or eSIM, as well as a plan that includes 5G.

If you’ve recently upgraded your phone but are still using an older SIM card, it may be worth checking whether your SIM supports 5G. Some older plans may not include access to 5G networks.

If you’re unsure, contact your network provider or check your plan details by logging into your account. Vodafone customers can check their plan in the Vodafone app, by logging into My Vodafone or checking our sim only deals

Make sure 5G is switched on

Sometimes you may not be able to connect to 5G because of a setting on your device. If 5G has been turned off, your phone won't connect to the 5G network even if coverage is available.

On iPhone, you can find the 5G setting in Mobile Data settings. Make sure this is set to either 5G auto or 5G on.

On Android devices, you'll usually find this option under Mobile Networks in the Settings app, although steps may vary depending on the manufacturer.

Some devices also allow you to prioritise certain network types, check your phone isn't prioritising 4G networks. It's also worth making sure Low Data Mode isn't selected, as this can limit how much data your phone uses over mobile networks.

Turn Low Power Mode off

Low Power Mode and Battery Saver features can help extend battery life, but they can also affect how your phone manages network connections.

Some devices reduce background activity or prioritise more power efficient connections when battery-saving features are enabled. This can sometimes affect 5G performance or prevent the device from connecting to 5G altogether.

Try temporarily disabling Low Power Mode, then check whether your phone reconnects to the 5G network.

Check for software updates

Outdated software can sometimes cause connectivity issues, including problems connecting to 5G.

Phone manufacturers regularly release updates that include bug fixes, security improvements and enhancements to network performance. Keeping your device up to date can help ensure it works correctly with the latest network technology.

Check for available updates in your phone’s settings and install any system or carrier updates.

Still having issues?

If you've checked your coverage, device settings, plan and software but your 5G still isn't performing as expected, there are a few additional troubleshooting steps worth trying:

  • Restart your phone

  • Turn Airplane Mode on and off

  • Remove and reinsert your SIM card if your device has a physical SIM

  • Reset your network settings

If the issue persists, contact your network provider for support. They may be able to identify account-related issues, local network faults or device-specific problems that aren't immediately obvious.
