Which one is best for you?
Trying to decide between iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X? Here’s what you need to know. iPhone 8 Plus, at first glance looks pretty similar to iPhone 7 Plus – complete with the familiar home button – except that the back is now made from glass rather than aluminium. This allows for one of the biggest changes between iPhone 8 Plus and previous models – wireless charging.
As you’d expect, there are some nice-to-have upgrades, too. These include a new True Tone display that adjusts the screen when used in different lighting, making it look more natural. There are upgrades to the camera, too, and a new portrait mode with some great effects to try out.
Along with iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus boasts the new A11 chip – 70% faster than the previous year’s A10 and capable of machine learning. But it’s iPhone X that really starts to take full advantage of this.
The first thing you’ll notice about iPhone X is its new design. A thinner, more flexible screen curves round the sides to meet the smooth glass back and home button has been gone – replaced by a bar incorporated into the screen. And while it’s physically smaller than iPhone 8 Plus it actually has a larger screen – 5.8 inches vs 5.5 inches – so your videos and images will look even better. And, of course, it supports wireless charging, too.
There’s a new section at the top to accommodate the front facing camera and 3D sensors. These allow 3D facial recognition – so you can unlock iPhone X just by looking into the screen. And thanks to A11’s machine learning capability, iPhone X learns to recognise you as your features change over time.
The 3D sensors also help make the most of the new selfie ‘portrait mode’ and even let you create ‘animojis’, where your expression is mapped onto personalised 3D emojis.
If you’re a fan of the current iPhone design, you might want to go for iPhone 8 Plus. But if you want access to all the features unlocked by 3D recognition and more, iPhone X may well be worth the extra spend.
