Two of Apple’s larger and most advanced iPhone models. The iPhone 17 Pro Max was released in September 2025, with the 16 Pro Max released in September 2024. Similar models mean similarities, let’s compare the two and see how they stack up.
For screen size, both offer a large 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display, with 120 Hz refresh rate and an Always-On display. They also both have an Action button (customisable for your favourite shortcut) and Camera Control (to easily capture photos and record video). Where things differ is in the body of the models, with iPhone 17 Pro Max offering a new aluminium unibody casing and the 16 Pro Max offering a titanium frame. The 17 Pro Max also offers Ceramic Shield 2, which has 3x better scratch resistance and a Ceramic Shield back for better protection – the 16 Pro Max is missing this.
For chips, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has the later A19 Pro chip, with iPhone 16 Pro Max offering A18 Pro. Both offer great battery life, with 17 Pro Max offering up to 37 hours of battery life – and the 16 Pro Max falling slightly behind at up to 33 hours of video playback. In terms of capacity, the 17 Pro Max offers an incredible 2TB of storage – the 16 Pro Max offering 1TB, which is also a great capacity.
Both Pro Max models offer a Pro camera system. The 17 Pro Max offers more for budding photographers with all rear lenses being 48MP – whereas the 16 Pro Max has a 12MP Telephoto lens. The 17 Pro Max also offers a better selfie camera with the 18MP Centre Stage front camera for advanced selfie framing and features, including the ability to tap to zoom and rotate. In comparison, the 16 Pro Max has a 12MP TrueDepth camera. However, they both have features like 4K Dolby Vision video recording at up to 60 fps and Cinematic mode.
To conclude, both the Pro Max models have a great amount to offer. The iPhone 17 Pro Max has more to offer with advanced camera improvements, a more durable body, and a better battery life. However, the 16 Pro Max is still a great choice for anyone interested in photography and a ‘Pro’ device.
